2025 County Kids of Steel
Race Day Rules and Safety Instructions
You will begin the triathlon with your swim!
Everyone has been pre assigned to a swim heat. Check the heat sheets in the kit pick up room or in the lobby of PEFAC for your swim time. You need to be upstairs in the Group Exercise Studio 30 minutes prior to your heat time for marshalling. We will ask all 14-17 year olds to head upstairs to be marshaled as soon as this briefing meeting is over. Only athletes are allowed in the Group Exercise Studio.
It is recommended that you wear the swim cap provided to you in the Group Exercise Room Upstairs because it assists with lap counting as there will be 2 swimmers per lane.
Once you’ve been led down to the pool deck in your heat, you will receive a timing chip strap that must be worn on your ankle for the remainder of the race.
You may use any stroke, tread water or float. You may stand on the bottom of the pool where you can reach it or rest by holding the lane marker. You may not propel yourself with the lane rope.
When you have TWO lengths left (i.e. there and back), the lap counter will put a flutter board into the pool to let you know. Try to keep track of your own lengths as well.
Swimmers must walk on the pool deck upon exiting the pool but you may run once you reach the carpet outside the blue back door.
Parents are invited to watch the swim from the sectioned off “parent viewing area” but space is limited so we ask that you vacate the space as soon as your child leaves the water.
From the swim, you will make your way out the back door to the transition zone and get ready for your bike leg.
Helmets must be on and securely done up before the bike is removed from the rack and must remain done up until the bike is returned to the rack. If it is not, officials may require you to put your bike back and do it properly. Securely done up means only 2 fingers can fit horizontally between the chin and the strap.
The volunteers are there to guide you, but you must try to complete the tasks in transition yourself first. IF you need help, ask a volunteer to help you. Assistance is offered only after the racer attempts to do the task unsuccessfully.
Race numbers must be worn during the bike and run portion of the race. These should already be placed at your bike, ready to put on after the swim.
From transition, you will walk or run your bike to the mount line (do not get on the bike until after you pass the mount line)
On the bike course:
The bike course is on the millennium trail which is a gravel trail. There is no centre line, but you must stick as far as possible to the right unless passing.
Drafting is not allowed – keep 5 metres back from the bike in front of you and pass carefully
No Blocking – Keep to the right and ride in single file unless passing. Alert fellow cyclists of your intention to pass by saying "on your left". Pass with caution, making sure you have a clear path.
Know your bib color and turn around point. Look for signs with balloons and volunteers to help you along the way.
Volunteers are positioned along the bike course and we will have two bike patrollers riding the course keeping riders safe so please flag someone if you need assistance.
You need to walk or run your bike from the dismount line towards transition.
Participants must rack their bikes in their original position in the transition area. There is signage with age categories and bib number ranges to direct athletes to the correct bike rack and a matching bib number where their bike must go. Transition volunteers will also be directing racers.
Once you’ve completed your bike distance:
On the Run
Stay on the course, running on the left side. On the way out on your run, you’ll be running on the road lane closest to the sidewalk that is blocked off with cones and on your way back, you’ll be running on the sidewalk.
Just like the bike course there will be signs that match your bib colour marking the turnaround point. Make sure you know your turnaround point by.
Make sure your race number is visible on the front – this is so the announcer can see who you are and announce your name at the finish – and don't forget to smile as you cross that line!
For those running a 1.5 KM or 3 KM distance, there is a water station located on the run course just before the 750 M mark. There is also a water/aid station available for all participants in transition.
you MUST have your timing chip taken off by a volunteer, receive your medal and will be directed to the food and refreshment station for all participants and volunteers.
Once the last racer has crossed the finish line and the results have been finalized, we will have an awards presentation at the podium, after which we will draw door prizes for volunteers and for the parents and caregivers of triathletes.
